TGM Constructors (Traylor/Granite/Massman)received letter of award dated September 24, 2002, for Lock Construction, McAlpine Lock Replacement Project, Louisville, Kentucky. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers accepted the $221,441,468 bid that was submitted June 18, 2002. This 1,200-ft x 110-ft lock on the Kentucky bank side of the Portland Canal will be adjacent to the existing lock and dam, replacing a 600-ft auxiliary lock chamber in service since 1922 and an inactive 360-ft 2-stage lock chamber originally constructed in the 1870's. Construction of the new lock and access bridge will take approximately 5 years to complete.

Milestones in 2005 included completion of 145,000 cy of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), completion of the new two-lane high level access bridge over the new and existing locks, erection of the first two miter gates at the wharf, and start of lock control building construction. The bridge opened to traffic off the existing bascule and swing spans. Through the end of 2005, 164,500 cy of lock wall mass concrete was placed (78% complete).

2006 brings the completion of lock wall mass concrete, 27,000 cy of culvert and diffuser concrete, approach wall cell construction, continued miter gate and culvert valve erection, existing bridge demolition, completion of the four control buildings, and ongoing mechanical and electrical work. Estimated project completion is August 2008.
