The 2-1/2 mile long US82 Mississippi River Bridge has a main span of 1,378 feet, twin 425 feet tall towers, concrete piers anchored 120 ft into riverbed and four fans of prestressing strand steel cable.
Construction work reached into the waters of the Mississippi River on December 10, 2001, as the U.S. Corps of Engineers began laying prefabricated ribbons of concrete called Articulated Concrete Mattress (ACM) on the bottom of the river. ACM was laid in the areas where support caissons and piers for the new bridge is located to provide scour protection.
