Traylor Bros. tapped the vast California market with the surge of activity associated with major toll bridge seismic retrofit work. Early in 1997, Traylor Pacific Division procured the first of the major Caltrans toll bridge retrofit projects - the Vincent Thomas Bridge Seismic Retrofit project in San Pedro, California. As with all of the San Francisco Bay area Bridges that serve as life lines to the San Francisco Peninsula, the San Mateo - Hayward Bridge needed strengthening to withstand a maximum credible earthquake with minimal risk of collapse. So, later in 1997, Traylor Pacific, in joint venture, procured this High Span Seismic Retrofit Project. Seismic Retrofit The San Mateo Bridge project was the first to use large diameter piles and installation of large precast elements underwater to seismically strengthen the existing foundations. This project also had over 8 million pounds of structural steel retrofit work. After completing a project for the city of Newport Bridge performing seismic strengthening of the foundation and piers for the Balboa Island Bridge, Traylor Pacific then procured the Seismic Retrofit of the main portion of the Coronado Bridge over San Diego Bay.
