Cannelton Hydroelectric Cofferdam(tbi0902)

This project is located on the south side of the Ohio River adjacent to Cannelton Locks and Dam, about 25 miles northeast of Owensboro, KY. The existing USACE Cannelton Locks and Dam are located at Ohio River Mile 720.7. Kiewit/Traylor Constructors (KTC) has been contracted by AMP Ohio to construct the cofferdam and perform the powerhouse excavation. The cofferdam construction and excavation are being performed to allow for the construction of an 82MW hydro-electric power plant.

The Cannelton Cofferdam project is a design build with Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers performing the design for the KTC team. The project includes approximately 1.233 million CY of excavation and embankment, 515,000 SF of cement-bentonite cut-off wall, a 600,000 TN marine placed rock and sand cofferdam, a dewatering system, flooding structure, and instrumentation. Anticipated completion is October 2010.
Marine Cofferdam: Approximately 210,553 TN of USACE Grade A Dumped Rock, 18,610 TN of #1 Bedding Rock, 9,595 SY of Filter Fabric, 364,118 TN of Dumped Sand, and 13,917 TN of 24" Rip Rap have been installed.
Cement-Bentonite Cut-off Wall: The Cement-Bentonite Cut-Off Wall is complete requiring approximately 492,968 SF of excavation.
Excavation: Approximately 42% of the 1.233 million CY of the excavation and embankment has been completed.
Instrumentation: 12 of the 16 Piezometers and 3 of the 5 Inclinometers have been installed and are operational.
Dewatering System: The 20 dewatering wells have been installed and are operational. The cell is currently dewatered to approximately elevation 298.
Flooding Structure: The Flooding Structure is complete requiring 475 CY of 5000 psi concrete and 40 tons of reinforcing steel.
