The Missouri Dept. of Transportation’s (MoDOT) Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program.

The largest bridge improvement project in Missouri history, will repair or replace 802 of Missouri’s most structurally challenged bridges over four years.Approximately 1,100 bridges are either Condition 3 (serious) or Condition 4 (poor). A key component of the Safe and Sound program is the $487-million design-build effort to replace 554 bridges in 111counties.

The program, due to its critical nature, extremely tight schedule (construction complete by Dec. 31, 2013), alternative delivery method, and sheer size, presents significant management challenges. The teams’ successful strategy is a tightly run plan that addresses everything from safety and logistics to subcontractor management.

As of early October 2011, the team has completed 363 of the 554 bridges, with 47 currently under construction, averaging 45 days per bridge, and each with an outstanding record of safety, quality and stakeholder satisfaction.
